Dr. Schmidt received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree from Lakeland College in 1958 and his Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music in 1963. He was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts degree (honoris causa) from VanderCook in 1993 and, in 2002, was elected to the College's Board of Trustees.
Schmidt served as Professor of Music Education and Conductor of Bands at Lakeland College from 1982 until his retirement in September of 1998. Prior to his tenure at Lakeland College, he taught for the River Valley School District, Spring Green, Wisconsin, for 25 years. |

He currently represents the Wisconsin School Music Association as a field representative and consultant. Recognized as one of Wisconsin's leading music educators, Dr. Schmidt has received numerous awards including: Pi Beta Mu Outstanding Bandmaster Award; National Band Association Citation of Excellence (Wisconsin Chapter-1979 & 1987); Wisconsin Music Education Association's Distinguished Service Award; Sudler Scroll Award and the Diploma of the Order of Merit, Historical Roll of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and holds a place on the Ted Lins Wall of Fame for Distinguished Service to the Community (Spring Green, WI) and to the River Valley School District.
